DO I QUALIFY?

Is there an age limit to become a volunteer firefighter?

Whether you're 15 or 50+, there’s a place for you in the fire service. Cadets typically start as young as 15, and many of our academy participants are in their 40s or 50s. If you’re in good health and able to pass a firefighter physical, age is just a number. If you’re ready to serve, we’re ready to train you.

Can I apply if I have a disability?

Absolutely. If you have a disability and are passionate about serving your community, we encourage you to apply. We’re committed to inclusivity and believe everyone has something to contribute.

Will my criminal background be reviewed?

Yes. To become a volunteer firefighter, you must not have any felony convictions. All applicants must pass a background check before entering the academy.

What is your policy on drug use?

All applicants must pass an initial drug screening and remain drug-free throughout their service. Random drug testing may be conducted to ensure a safe and professional environment for everyone.

What kind of driving record do I need?

A valid Oregon driver’s license and a clean driving history are important for firefighter candidates. If you have multiple citations, it doesn't automatically disqualify you — but requirements may vary by department. We recommend reaching out directly to discuss your situation.

Do I need to live in the fire district to join?

Many departments require you to live or work within their service area, but exceptions can sometimes be made. Contact your nearest fire agency to learn about their specific residency policies.

When is firefighter training held?

The Santiam Fire Academy runs for approximately four months, with training sessions on Wednesday evenings, Saturdays, and occasional Sundays. Training includes classroom instruction and hands-on skills. Full attendance is required to successfully complete the academy.

What are department drill nights like?

Each fire department has its own drill schedule, but most hold drills one night a week for about three hours. These regular training sessions help you build your skills and stay sharp.

How long before I can respond to calls?

Typically, new volunteers are eligible to respond to emergency calls within a year of starting the academy. However, response eligibility can vary depending on your progress, participation, and demonstrated skill level.
